Centro Comercial Campesino… Where HOPE is on every shelf
Wow - Chacraseca has a REAL Farmer's Market!
It's called "Centro Comerical Campesino" (Farmer's Commercial Center) It looks a lot like a little grocery store -- because that's just what it is! Only this grocery store is not only selling toilet paper and bread and coffee... It's also selling the yuca Antonio grew, and corn from Celia's field, and the pelibuey that Jairo raised, and pork from Melba, and tomatoes from Juana, and beans from Arlen, and more will be added with each harvest...
Yes! The basic grains, the fruits and vegetables, and much of the meat sold
in this market comes directly from the farmers in Chacraseca. Which means the farmers get more for the crops than they do when their only option is to sell to 'middle men.' The market is cooperatively owned and operated by the community of Chacraseca and the profits will all go directly back to the community to support community projects! AND two people from Chacraseca have jobs!
The grand opening was June 18th. JustHope's Board of Directors worked with the volunteers from the community to clean vegetables, bag beans and rice, and stock shelves!
The opening inventory was small (inventory is expensive), but the HOPE of the volunteers, the farmers, the customers, and those gathered for the grand opening was GRAND indeed! They are confident this little Farmer's Market is going to make a HUGE difference in their lives.
